Barbara Bilkerdijk has been a celebrity makeup artist for over twenty years. She has worked extensively in film and publicity, applying her innovative makeup techniques and products to some of Hollywood’s coveted celebrities. Her celebrity portfolio includes Lil Kim, FAITH, Monica Bellucci, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. Barbara’s knowledge and expertise led her to a contract with a major production company. The glossy magazine pages that Barbara studied as a child impacted how she viewed herself and how she saw other women. These initial impressions are ultimately what sparked Barbara’s interest in a career as a makeup artist.
Barbara’s love affair with makeup started at New York City’s finer department stores. A bright-eyed teenager with big dreams, Barbara arrived from Amsterdam, with a plan to work her way into the dressing rooms of the entertainment industry’s most elite personalities. Barbara did not waste anytime soliciting the top beauty counters for a position amongst their beauty technicians.
Her passion for beauty and keen eye for detail spearheaded her career from the cosmetic counters of Chanel and Yves St. Laurent to the movie sets of America’s favorite films. The long hours on the set, that were not conducive to her longing to start a family, led Barbara to embark on her life long dream to start her own make up line. Barbara created the Bilkerdijk family of products to provide a practical approach to perfect looking skin.
The inspiration for Bilkerdijk Custom Blend Cosmetics was more out of necessity for a line that catered to all skin types rather than vanity. She wanted to develop a way to create a natural finish without having to apply multiple layers of products. With the growing popularity of makeup artist lines there were few make up options for women that highlighted their natural hues. Barbara’s frustration with the lack of flattering makeup on the market that offered custom blends that covered but didn’t feel heavy was one of the inspirations behind Bilkerdijk’s custom blend foundations.
Barbara has combined her years of experience in the cosmetic industry and her life long artistic background to create Bilkerdijk’s unique oil-free and moisturizing; water based blends that offer “breathable” coverage for the everyday woman. Born to simplify a woman’s make up routine the collection includes a foundation that can be used as a concealer, over 50 different colors for your lips and eyes, and a complete skincare regimen.
Known in the industry for her speed and distinct style, Barbara remains in high demand amongst celebrities for public appearances. In between publicity junkets, Barbara can be found mixing customized foundations in her New York studio.
